Looking for guidance in understanding the ways and means of Southern culture? Look no further. Florence King's celebrated field guide to the land below the Mason-Dixon Line is now blissfully back in print, just in time for the Clinton era. The Failed Souther Lady's classic primer on Dixie manners captures such storied types as the Southern Woman (frigid, passionate, sweet, bitchy, and scatterbrained--all at the same time), the Self-Rejuvenating Virgin, and the Good Ole Boy in all his coats and stripes. (The Clinton questions--is he a G.O.B. or isn't he?--Miss king covers in her hilarious new Afterword.) No one has ever made more sharp, scathing, affectionate, real sense out of the land of the endless Civil War than Florence King in these razor-edged pages.

At this time of writing, The Mobi Southern Ladies & Gentlemen has garnered 10 customer reviews with rating of 5 out of 5 stars. Not a bad score at all as if you round it off, it’s actually a perfect TEN already. From the looks of that rating, we can say the Mobi is Good TO READ!

This book is spot on in identifying the various Types of Southerners, with a twist and a sting. The author is something of an outsider, despite her grandmother being a Byrd (or was it a Randolph?) not only because of her personal proclivities but because her father was a London cockney (I have one too but he's six generations back.) But she reminds me of Kipling's comment in "My Son's Wife" about a Londoner from the aesthetic crowd moving to the country and reading Surtees for the first time - he would visit around with his country/county neighbors, and then "go home and identify them, one by one,out of the natural history books by Mr. Surtees, on the table beside the sofa."And yes, Ms. King is undeniably vulgar at times. And there you have another Great Divide in the South - between the determinedly genteel in the cities and towns, blanching at the use of a swear word . . . and the more practical and earthy farmers and horsey or doggy types and other rural denizens. My mother's family were townsfolk from Augusta GA and Charleston SC (and of the two Augusta is the more ancestry-proud, believe it or not). My maternal grandmother did in fact remark several times that her grandmother was a Byrd. My father's family were planters, cotton factors, and such like from the rural Chattahoochee River Valley and much less concerned with the niceties. Daddy would say something outrageous, and Mama would roll her eyes.So it has always been.
